Ventilated Concrete Floor – Woodchip / Biomass Drying

Crop Drying Floor

Ventilated Concrete Floor

With over 40 years of experience supplying the construction and agricultural industries with concrete materials, Spanwright have become a leading supplier of precast concrete products throughout Ireland and the UK.

Spanwright’s ventilated concrete floor is designed to cater for a variety of drying requirements from woodchip to arable crops. High strength concrete combined with modern precast production techniques has resulted in a hard wearing, durable and sustainable floor capable of withstanding heavy machinery across many sectors. The Spanwright ventilated concrete floor solution has been design to provide a greater life span than other hard wood ventilated floor comparisons – especially around the building entrance where increased traffic occurs.

Supported on timber bearers, the Spanwright products piece together to create the floor system, allowing an undisruptive and evenly dispersed flow of air to pass through the floor and into the store above where the material requiring drying is kept.

The Spanwright ventilated floor solution caters for farmers and other commercial businesses who rely on either woodchip to fuel their biomass burners or harvest grain for various purposes. At suitable intervals, both woodchip and grain can be stored and dried on this same Spanwright ventilated floor thus providing many cost saving benefits to their business under one roof.

Spanwright Concrete Ventilated Floor benefits:

  • Multi-crop drying & cooling solution
  • Fast & Simple Installation

Farm Development Example

Coulthards farm, based near Carlisle, has erected a new building to assist with the ongoing development on his large dairy farm for efficient and sustainable energy saving processes.

To complement the existing on farm energy efficient process of Anaerobic Digestion – which captures the methane gas to produce heat and electricity via burning, the Coulthard farm now has a new arrival. A biomass boiler fuelled by woodchip will produce additional energy for the farm utilising a Spanwright ventilated concrete drying floor solution.

In this example, the woodchip is bought in from source and requires drying before being used in the biomass burner. The woodchip is placed on the Spanwright ventilated floor and drying takes place. Pressurised air fed from a large chamber flows down through a series of underfloor ducts and up into the woodchip through the ventilated Spanwright floor. This similar process is also repeated for other crops such as grain highlighting efficiencies through the use of this Spanwright multi crop drying floor system.

Delivery & Fitting

On this example, Spanwright were contracted to supply and fit the entire flooring solution however, due to the unique Spanwright product design, this flooring solution can easily be fitted by the client providing further cost savings for the project.

The products were off-loaded, managed and sequenced to allow the most efficient fitting arrangement to suit the client’s site. The Spanwright site engineers placed all support bearer’s and concrete units across the development with ease within a relative small time frame.
