Precast Concrete Flooring for Ground Floor of New Wiltshire Primary School

Spanwright precast concrete floor slabs proved the optimum solution for the ground floor of an all new primary school in Melksham, Wiltshire. The 420 capacity primary school opened in time for the 2015/2016 school term to accommodate the growing population in the east of the town.

The main contractor appointed Spanwright UK as the precast concrete sub-contractor, responsible for the design, manufacture and installation of precast concrete products.

Long spans were required in order to reduce foundation requirements and the Spanwright design team specified a 200mm prestressed slab for the job. Notches and openings were required in the concrete slabs to cater for the steel frame and services. Manufactured in an ISO certified factory with strict quality control procedures proved important in the successful delivery of the project.

Key Project Facts;

  • 348 precast concrete slabs
  • 68 Splayed Ends totalling 210m
  • 260 Notches and Service Openings
  • Maximum slab length of 8310mm
  • Covering 2,500m2 of ground floor
  • 31 loads delivered via articulated curtain sided trailer and tractor units
  • 1 80 tonne mobile crane used to lift the concrete units into place
  • 9 working days to install the entire ground floor
